fish
Generally speaking, fish are water-dwelling, cold-blooded vertebrates possessing gills for breathing, scales for protection, and fins for swimming. Fish have been venerated (and even deified) in mythology and religion, probably because fish have been a vital food source throughout history, supplying protein and other important nutrients.
Globally, people eat an average of 36 pounds of fish per year. Consumption by country varies widely: Mongolians eat less than a pound of fish annually, while in the Maldives they eat a whopping 420 lbs per person. Americans average about fifty pounds of seafood per year. Worldwide consumption has been growing at 3.6% per year, partly due to interest in the health benefits of fish (high protein, low fat, good source of Omega-3).
Some good blogs about fish are Ralph Brennan's New Orleans Seafood Blog, Steve Dobson's Fisherman's Blog, and The Nature Aquariums & Aquascapes of Samit Roy.
