fishing

In many rural parts of the world, the hunting and gathering of fish and shellfish is practiced much as it has been for millennia, employing such ancient methods as netting, hand-gathering, trapping, spearing, and using lines with baited hooks. High-tech commercial fishing boats still use baited hooks, nets, and traps to catch fish, shrimp, and crabs; mollusks such as oysters, clams, and mussels are often still gathered by hand. Increased demand and overharvesting have impacted the populations of species such as bluefin tuna, swordfish, and grouper, though increased consumer awareness and efforts toward sustainability and global regulation can help relieve some of the fishing pressure.

Sport (or Recreational) fishing covers a broad range from fly fishing to big-game (or deep-sea) fishing. In addition to license requirements, many areas have regulations that control the type, size, and number of fish that sport fishermen are allowed to keep; a policy of ‘catch-and-release’ allows depleted gamefish species to re-establish their numbers where overfishing or other factors have had an adverse effect.
