A fitness challenge is a sort of competition in which participants aim to lose weight and become fit within a number of days or weeks, usually by following a strict diet and an intense exercise regime.
People who participate in fitness challenges are generally sedentary individuals who are not used to working out. They have to break away from their unhealthy daily routines and embrace a new, active lifestyle, based on the consumption of mostly raw food and unsweetened beverages.
The purpose of fitness challenges is usually to overcome seasonal weight gain, depression, lethargy and even a deep-seated fear of failure. Many people who accept such a challenge become determined to see it through, and often agree to participate in groups or teams, where individuals can benefit from the team's moral support.
