Fleet can refer to any collection of vehicles or ships, though the term has several connotations.


Fleet vehicles are groups of two or more vehicles that are owned by a single entity, typically a government agency, rather than a private business or an individual. State owned fleets can consist of cabs, public transportation vehicles, police cars, as well as vehicles belonging to government agencies. However, sometimes this term can hold a broader meaning and also refer to the vehicle fleet of a commercial entity, which can consist of trucks, vans, buses and cars. To manage and keep track of their fleet, companies will often employ fleet tracking systems based on GPS technology.

Fishing fleets are ensembles of commercial fishing vessels, which either operate out of a specific port, or perform a certain type of fishing. In addition, fishing fleets can also denote the entire collection of fishing vessels belonging to a country.

Naval fleets represent large groups of warships that make up the most important part of the Navy, and consequently, a fleet of ships at sea is the equivalent of an army on land. Most naval fleets retain a permanent formation and are assigned to specific areas of the ocean or sea. Fleets are commanded by Admirals or Rear Admirals, and are usually divided into several squadrons, with the squadrons being organized into divisions. Modern-day fleets are made up of surface vessels, submarines, as well as ship-based aircraft that are specialized in military operations at sea.

The term fleet can also be descriptive of a flotilla, which is essentially a formation of smaller-sized warships. Flotillas are usually made of a single type of ship, and may be commanded by either a Rear Admiral, a Commodore, or a Captain. While flotillas have no equivalent to military land formations, their value in a sea battle is similar to that of a regiment or brigade.

Fleets may represent groups of racing sailboats, which may be further organized into classes, aand divided in their turn into divisions and flights.


Fleet Aircraft was also the name of a Canadian aircraft manufacturer that operated from 1928 to 1957.
