Fleet tracking is the management of commercial vehicles using tracking and communication technology such as GPS and SMS (Short Message Service). Tracking reduces the uncertainty and increases control that business managers have over the movement of their fleet.

Fleet tracking is used in many different industries in addition to shipping, including taxi services, on-call service vehicles, and municipal law enforcement. GPS was originally developed for use by the military, and its use continues among ships and aircraft fleets. In addition to navigation, the tracking allows controllers to maneuver around traffic delays and plan for weather interference. Taking the best route reduces fuel waste and lowers emissions

Changes in efficiency are closely monitored, so that even slight decreases can be immediately addressed. This prevents efficiency loss from the gradual degradation of the vehicle, and encourages preventative maintenance instead of waiting for a roadside breakdown to spur repairs. Tracking offers a practical solution to identifying money sinks and increase the company's profitability.
