I discovered Mate a little over a week ago and I am already using it in a live project. The Mate website describes it as .. Mate is a tag-based, event-driven Flex framework. Flex applications are event-driven. Mate framework has been created to make it easy to handle the events your Flex application creates.

Spekt IDE a new alternative for Flex Builder

Spekt IDE will be a great alternative for Flex Builder which also combine the features like drag-n-drop code control into the code. Other stuff like Flashdevelop is great but the propouse of Spekt aims to be better. The price is very cheap $29.00. Althought , I believe that if the creator(Eric Suen) could open-source the program and get people helps.

When encoding ActionScript objects to XML using a schema, such as when using a SOAP based WebService, it is not uncommon to provide a subtype (say, an Employee class) to an API that merely specifies a base type (say, a Person class). An issue is that the encoder does not know the subtype that your value is targeting so you must provide a hint.
