flu
Influenza or “flu” is a respiratory illness that is brought on by the influenza viruses. Every year in the US according to the Center for Disease Control somewhere between 5-20% of the population will contract the flu. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu related complications, and more than 30,000 die each year from the flu and its related complications. The effects of the flu vary from individual to individual and may run from mild to severe. Flu treatment involves ingestion of plenty of fluids and foods with immunity-building properties, vitamin C, and lots of rest and sleep. The bulk of the flu symptoms reported in 2009 have been from the H1N1 or Swine flu virus. The best prevention for the flu is to obtain a flu vaccine prior to the start of the flu season.
The Wall Street Journal hosts a blog on the Swine Flu in the US and Mexico with up to date information on vaccines, spread of the illness and medical alerts.
