fly rod
A fly rod is a long, willowy, supple type of fishing rod designed to cast a fly line and flies. Fly fishing differs from most types of angling as no weight is attached to the line to propel the artificial bait to the fish.
First crafted in Europe from woods like Greenhart and Willow, contemporary fly rods are made from space age carbon composites, bamboo, and fiberglass. Each material is tapered precisely to assist the caster in the aerial manipulations of line and fly.
Fly rods are quite expensive compared to other tackle, but like any handcrafted item, will last the angler a lifetime with appropriate care and maintenance. Fly fishermen are uncomfortable referring to them as "fishing poles", and have a tendency to sneer at the term, insisting on respect commensurate with their cost.
