Flying Saucers is a term often used to describe what are otherwise known as UFOs, or unidentified flying objects. The term was first coined in 1947 when pilot Kenneth Arnold spotted several flying objects as he flew over Mt. Rainier, Washington. He described the objects as looking like "saucers skipping over water," hence the media coining the term "flying saucer".

As more and more sightings were reported, rumors of a flying saucer crash near Roswell, New Mexico, led to a soon-to-become famous newspaper headline claiming "RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region." The bodies of space aliens were also said to be recovered in the crash, touching off a number of conspiracy theories about a government coverup. That debate continues to the present day.

The most popular theories about UFOs include secret government aircraft, and craft piloted by space aliens. Over the years, there have also been numerous reports of humans being abducted by UFOs. Several organizations are devoted to UFO Research. These include the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS), and the National UFO Reporting Center.

But it all began with the Flying Saucers.
