Tag details

In contemporary usage a font is a digital typeface used on a computer, although traditionally it is used as a term for one weight or subset of a typeface. Fonts carry the outlines of all of the characters of a typeface for reproduction using a computer printer. They are most commonly available in TrueType, OpenType, or PostScript format. A very large variety of computer fonts are available today. At least 70,000 have been catalogued from many different font design houses called "foundries," in a reference to the historical manufacture of typefaces from cast metal.

The most popular fonts in current usage are probably Helvetica or one of its many variations, and Times Roman in its many forms.

Modern digital typefaces are available online from sites like Monotype, Fontcraft and MyFonts.
