food storage

Food storage is a large component of Emergency Preparedness. If there is a natural disaster, economic crisis, or even just a job loss in the family, it is advisable to have some food set aside that your family could live off of. There are three main aspects of food storage which are commonly discussed on the web:

Water Storage: You should have a least 72 hours worth of water on hand and easily accessible. If you have the space it is recommended to store up to two weeks worth of water and also include some sort of filter or purification system as well. The amount to store is one gallon per person per day.

Three Month Food Supply: The three month food supply consists of storing three months worth of foods that your family eats on a regular basis. Some people choose to store all shelf-stable ingredients, while others include items that can be stored in the freezer. You can make a detailed meal plan for the entire three months, or simply stock up on the items that you most commonly cook with.

Long Term Food Storage: Long term foods include basic cooking ingredients such as wheat, legumes, oil, powdered milk, etc. If you had to live off of food storage items for an extended period of time, you would need to include these items with long shelf-lives.

A common mantra relating to food storage is to store what you eat and eat what you store. You can scope out the blogosphere to discover great food storage recipes and start using your stored items today!
