free money

Free money is a concept that is used to describe a situation where an individual obtains a government grant to cover their bills and other monthly expenses. However, whether or not regular people can tap into this source of free money is still subject to much debate.

Websites that discuss money saving methods and alternative sources of income usually cite government grants as safe and easy methods of adjusting your finances. Moreover, most of the information currently available in the media regarding free money revolves around the works of Matthew Lesko, who is an infomercial personality and author that claims to have intensively studied government grants, for over 25 years. As a media personality, Matthew Lesko's trademark is a uniquely designed suit covered in question marks.

His 2003 book, "Free Money To Pay Your Bills" was well received by the public, although critics have stated that many of the claims in the book were gross and misleading interpretations of various public assistance programs that most able, working adults are not eligible for. The New York State Consumer Protection Board drafted a report in 2004, in which Lesko was accused of misrepresenting examples of individuals who had actually benefited from many of the grants he mentioned in his books. While several forms of free social assistance do exist, they are usually reserved for individuals who are truly in need, or for highly specialized groups of people (such as farmers or scientists).

While Matthew Lesko suggests that he is able to direct people toward finding "billions in hidden dollars", critics claim that much of the information gathered by Lesko regarding federal grants is not hidden or difficult to obtain, and that civil servants are able to thoroughly inform interested individuals regarding the formalities of obtaining a government grant.

Mathew has been strongly criticized for his unethical attempts in leading people to believe that they can simply demand free money from the government, and has been named "a free-rider" by Emmy-Award winning writer and journalist Bernard Goldberg. In 2005, the New York Times also criticized Lesko for having suggested that he has a current association with the paper.
