Fungal refers to that which is caused by a fungus. The term is usually used to describe fungal infections, which are known as mycoses.

Fungi are a distinct biological kingdom of eukaryotic organisms (separate from plants, animals and bacteria) that includes molds, yeasts and mushrooms. Fungal infections are usually caused by inhalation of spores or by localized colonization of the skin. People who are on strong antibiotics for a longer period of time, immunodeficient individuals and chemotherapy patients are most likely to develop infections.

A common fungal infection is ringworm, or dermatophytosis, named as such because it causes an orange-red ring to appear on the infected area if the skin. Ringworm treatment includes various topical agents, such as miconazole, terbinafine or clotrimazole, applied twice a day until symptoms disappear.

Fungal
infections can usually be prevented by avoiding sharing of clothing and towels, as well walking barefoot in locker rooms or on the beach.
