A fungus is any member of the kingdom "Fungi", namely an eukaryotic organism (formed of complex cell structures). Fungi are biologically classified separately from other life forms, such as animals, plants and bacteria. The primary difference between fungi and plants is that fungus cell walls do not contain cellulose, but chitin - the same material found in the exoskeletons of crabs, lobsters and shrimps. From a functional point of view, chitin and cellulose can be compared to keratin, which is the main structural component found in human skin, nail and hair cells.

Fungi includes yeasts, molds and mushrooms. Mycosis is the term used to define any type of fungal infection affecting humans and animals. These infections are quite common, as a number of environmental and physiological characteristics can contribute to their development. Areas prone to contracting a fungus infection are the scalp and nails. Toenails are particularly vulnerable, and since the infection is typically imbedded within the nail, toenail fungus treatment is quite challenging and may take a long time.

One common type of fungal infection affecting nails is onychomycosis, which is responsible for nearly half of all nail abnormalities. It is estimated that about 8% of all adults will be affected by this infection during the course of their lives.
