If you don't know what a futon is, here's the scoop: a futon is pretty much a mattress that can double as a couch. That is what it is in America, anyway. The futon actually originated in Japan, and is a thin "mattress" brought out and unfolded to sleep on. Then the futon is folded up and stored during the day to conserve space.
In the U.S., the futon has been taken and changed from its original Japanese roots. The futon here in the West is also a mattress, though it is quite a bit thicker, and it usually is accompanied by a frame so that it can be sat upon and used as a sofa during the day, while the frame is folded out at night for the futon to cover like a bed.
The frames of futons can be made of wood or steel, and futons can take on whatever look the crafter wants them to have. The appeal of a futon is that they can be used for apartments where space is at a premium, and they are generally cheaper than a full-fledged bed or sofa bed mattress.
