What is a "Gamer"?

It used to be that a "Gamer" was anyone who played role-playing games (RPGs). Dungeons and Dragons and other popular role-playing games played with dice and miniature figures were extremely popular in the 80s. However, as the computer and internet became ubiquitous, Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORGPs) began to surpass RPGs in popularity. Now a "Gamer" refers to anyone who cannot wait to log in and play Starcraft, World of Warcraft, Halo, or another game of that ilk.

The best way to tell if you are a gamer or not is if you cannot go a day without playing at least some sort of role-playing game. Then you are a gamer. However, if you get up from playing a video or computer game for two hours and think to yourself, "I’ve just wasted two hours of my life that I will never get back again," then you're probably not a gamer.

In sports, a "Gamer" is someone who exhibits incredible heart and soul. When Curt Schilling pitched his Boston Red Sox to a victory in the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees — while his ankle was bleeding profusely — he earned a spot amongst the great "gamers" of baseball. Boston went on to win the World Series that year, their first since 1918.
