Garmin is a large company, founded in 1989 Gary Burrell and Min Kao, that mainly develops popular Global Positioning System receivers, but also other electronic devices.

By the year 2000, Garmin had sold over three million GPS devices in 100 countries and carried by 2500 distributors. The company also holds numerous patents on GPS technology. Two of their most popular products are the StreetPilot and Nuvi series, which combine in-vehicle navigation for the driver with vehicle tracking and remote monitoring.


Garmin manufactures numerous types of devices and applications, such as marine GPS, handheld GPS, iQue PDA receivers, sonar fishfinders, laptop GPS and mobile phone applications, Garmin Forerunner for physical training and aviation technologies.

Today's Garmin devices display the vehicle's current location on a vector-based map. The data is stored in the in built memory of the device or on an external disk. For this purpose, the company offers a wide range of maps for purchase, including topographic maps, nautical maps and road maps.
