genital warts

Genital warts are caused by HPV or Human Papilloma virus - the most common sexually transmitted disease and therefore of newsworthy interest. This virus enters your body through microscopic tears in the superficial layers of the skin in the genital area.

It is vital to know that once HPV is in your skin, in general, it is there for life and can be passed on to your sexual partner. However, in some cases genital warts treatment, or at least, temporary removal, may be possible. As far as prevention goes, the newly introduced HPV vaccination has caused much controversy amongst those for and those against.

In women, genital warts form on the skin around the external genitalia, the skin around the anus, the vagina or the cervix. In men, warts appear on and under the foreskin, on the penis or around the anus. It is thought that those with visible warts are most at risk of spreading the virus.

A lowered immune system can make you more likely to develop warts. Both genital warts and HPV are a serious health concern particularly in women where genital warts have been linked to cervical cancer, hence the significance of the vaccine.

Blogs such as Revolution Health offer an introspective look on the condition, as well as displaying people's questions, answers and reactions to the topic.
