geolocation
Geolocation refers to the identification of the geographic location of an electronic device, such as radar, mobile phone or computer. Unlike global positioning, geolocation is more useful in retrieving meaningful locations (including street and building numbers) rather than just geographic coordinates.
Geolocation is typically used to determine the location of a computer connected to the internet, based on its IP address. The term can also be used in other context to refer to animal tracking, GPS vehicle tracking or fleet management techniques.
Geolocation utilizes advanced radio frequency location systems that work with multilateration navigation techniques. This involves measuring the Time Difference of Arrival of a radio signal from an emitter to three or more receiver points. The signal arrives at different times at two separate receiver sites, which enables the geolocation system to determine the time difference.
You'll find bloggers talking about geolocating at sites like nnlm.gov and geotargetingscripts.com.
