Just like English and Dutch, German belongs to the family of West Germanic languages. It is spoken by an estimated 90-100 million people as a native tongue and many more people within the European Union speak German as a second language.

German can be a beautiful language. But for the novice, it can also be a difficult one to master. Even with a few semesters of “Speaking German 101” under your belt, it can still take years to learn this language well enough to be the life of the party at the next Oktoberfest.

When it comes to properly learning the art of German translation, you want to choose a teacher who is native to this language, first of all – and preferably someone who is certified or registered. The person you select should be extremely proficient in reading, writing, and an expert in speaking and understanding the language verbally. Requesting the translator provide proof of proficiency exams is also a good idea.

Google offers translation websites for German and other languages, but these services are not always one hundred percent accurate and may contain minor errors. To get a better handle on it, you can find people blogging (and even speaking some German) at sites like cautg.org.
