get

To get something is to obtain, acquire, or achieve it. If you go and get a sofa bed mattress for the holiday visitors those three descriptions of the word fit well. Then why does saying, "Get outta here!" seem to imply the opposite? One "get" is an attraction towards, and the other is a repelling of sorts. Go figure, it's the English language!

To be sure, get has a lot of different meanings. It can mean to become (as in get pregnant), it can mean to arrive (as in get to a destination), and it can mean to induce (as in get him to come to the dinner table), among many other definitions.

The $64,000 question is: what is the best antonym for get? Answer: take all the synonyms like the ones listed above and take your pick!
