Most often, when people hear "GI Joe" they think of the cartoon series which aired in 1985.

However, GI Joe action figures were the first introduction of GI Joe. The action figures came out in 1964 and were part of the 12-inch line produced by the toy company Hasbro.

Still, 3 years before the cartoon aired, Hasbro relaunched the action figures with a 3 and 3/4 inch collection. This collection included vehicles and play-sets as well as action figures.

A movie, GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra was released in 2009. The IMDB synopsis for the movie is as follows: "An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as GI Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer."
