For a long time, gift certificates were considered a "cop-out" gift for birthdays and holidays. They seemed to convey the feeling that the gift giver did not have the time (nor the desire) to pick out a better gift that they thought the person they were giving the gift to would really like. The gift certificate seemed to scream, "Go get whatever you want, I really don't have time right now!"

However, this perception is changing, and changing rapidly. Who wants a book about 19th Century Bridge Architecture? Or a CD by a band we don't even really like? Most of the time we are taking these gifts back to the store to exchange for something we really want anyway!

Not only are gift certificates becoming more and more popular, but gift certificates can be very personal. There are websites that provide online vouchers, coupons, and gift cards as templates. These templates are easily customizable for any person and for any occasion. Many people prefer these customizable cards because that makes their gift unique and special.
