The origins of golf date almost 1,000 years ago in Europe. It is widely believed that the version of golf that we know today was first played in Scotland in the 1100s.

The object of golf is to get a small ball (made of various synthetic materials) and striking it using clubs (also made of various materials, but usually wood or metal) to hit the ball in the air and on the ground, ultimately placing the ball into a hole. The player who takes the least amount of hits, known commonly as "strokes," to complete the course is declared the winner. Usually golf games consist of either 18 or nine holes, depending on how long of a game players decide to play.

Some of the most successful professional golfers of the last century include: Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Tiger Woods, and Tom Watson.
