grant

A grant is a sum of money that is most often issued to an individual or group for the purpose of funding a specific project. Grants are usually awarded after the party seeking funds has written a proposal outlining the merits of the project, and how the money will be used.

Although grants should not be confused with loans — the funds are usually awarded, rather than lent — many grants come with their own conditions. A Grant is most often issued by government agency, but can also be given through private institutions or even individual philanthropists.

Common scenarios involving a grant might come from non-profit organizations, or from state and local governments seeking federal funding.

Grants are also commonly given to individuals seeking disaster relief; to fund higher education (scholarships are a form of grant); or looking to start a small business.

The main difference between someone issuing a grant and the use of private credit, is that the money is most often not expected to be paid back. Grants are also typically not intended for use in an enterprise for profit (although there are exceptions to this rule).
