gun rights

The issue of gun rights is discussed on numerous websites and blogs like National Gun Rights and Gun Rights Advocates, to name but a few. The focus of the discussion is countering gun control advocates in order to preserve the right to keep and bear arms. The message is generally the same - it's not about guns so much as it's about freedom.

The basis for the idea of gun "rights" is the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, where it states, "...the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Like the rest of the Bill of Rights (the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution), the 2nd Amendment is a description of what the government can't do against "the people." And, the idea of gun rights is embodied in state constitutions as well.

Gun rights in America is an emotional as well as a historical issue. The American Revolution was started when General Gage marched against the armories of the colonists. Southern states passed laws against firearm ownership by former slaves, and guns were illegally confiscated from law-abiding people as part of the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Many recognize that the reason gun rights are such a hotly debated topic is simply because we only have the rights we fight for. Others argue convincingly in favor of gun rights by showing statistically that more guns equals less crime.
