hacking

Hacking is the concept of discovering and using undocumented features of a piece of hardware or software. Although the concept itself assumes no malicious intent, hacking has long been ostracized by the media as an illegal activity.

Many aspects of hacking are complex, specialized and impossible to understand to a member of the general public without basically becoming a hacker themselves. Therefore to the general public hacking appears at best as a shady if not outright illegal activity.

As the term caught on, it became also used to describe a more knowledgeable approach to using anything as sites like Life Hacker and Mind Hacks (also a book) illustrate. Anyone learning to use a new cell phone would agree that many aspects of today's technology (and life in general) are so complex that to become a hacker in the eyes of an average person one only needs to locate and actually read a proper piece of documentation, in most cases openly available on the Web.

In many cases hacking also means an improvement to the piece of hardware or software in question. Many open-minded manufacturers actually encourage hacking of their products intending to learn from the published hacks both in terms of improving security and just general usability of their product.
