Tag details

Hadoop is an open source Java-based framework created by Apache that helps process massive amounts of data and is widely used in website search tools and large data mining applications.

Hadoop processes large data sets collected from the web, like crawls for search engine indexes, as an example.

Yahoo, the largest contributor to the project, uses Hadoop extensively because their success is based on processing enormous amounts of data.

Specifically, Hadoop builds the web indexes that power the Yahoo search engine.

Hadoop is written in Java, which means it can run on any Java-enabled platform, but most companies install it on a Linux operating system.

You'll find bloggers talking about Hadoop at sites like The VeryCloud Blog and The DigitalBuzz Blog.
