hbo

HBO is an acronym for Home Box Office, an American premium cable network owned by Time Warner, Inc. Its staple programming initially consisted of feature films after they had completed their run in movie theatres and before their release on video tape.

Not subject to the content restrictions of broadcast networks, premium channels like HBO were able to show PG and R-rated movies unedited. While theatrically released motion pictures still represent a substantial amount of programming, they have expanded to originally-produced series such as The Sopranos, Rome and Game of Thrones, as well as made for cable movies and documentaries, live concerts and on demand programming which all enjoy the freedom to include nudity, violence, and adult language that would not be permitted on broadcast television.

At this writing, HBO's programming reaches 28 million subscribers in the United States, making it the second largest premium network in the U.S.
