Headphones are a set of mini-loudspeakers that a user can place close to their ears in order to listen to music, podcasts, books on tape, etc.


Headphones can, in a very real sense, be a ticket to another world (and sometimes another time). You can plug them in, throw in your favorite CD or mp3 and take a short vacation from the here and now. The song you gave your first girlfriend, the soundtrack to your favorite movie, or the theme of your Junior Prom dance can all serve to transport you to another time and another place.


Headphones also have the ability to transform the exercise of running from true torture to leisure time as you listen to music or lectures that get your mind off the actual act of running.

Whether they are earbuds (earphones), huge headphones that cover your entire ear, or disposable headphones that you sometimes get on an airplane trip (to watch a movie or television while you fly), you must be careful not to crank the volume too high. Hearing loss and inner-ear damage are very real dangers of listening to headphones too loudly.
