heartburn

Heartburn is not "the burning of the heart" as one may expect based on the name. Heartburn is a digestive issue where the esophagus becomes irritated after stomach acid comes into contact with it.

Often accompanied with a sour taste, the irritation sometimes travels from the diaphragm to the throat.

A lot of people have mild heartburn, occurring maybe once a month and is usually a result of diet and can often be controlled by antacids. Others have a more chronic condition, often affecting them daily, which is then referred to as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or simply acid reflux.

Some people are born with GERD, when the valve that keeps stomach acid in the stomach is weak, such as (more often than not) is the case in babies born with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome.
