heartworm
Heartworm disease in canines, also called dirofilariasis, is a potentially fatal and very serious disease.
Heartworms spend the later part of their lives in the right side of the heart and in the large blood vessels that connect the heart to the lungs.
They block the heart and major blood vessels leading from the heart to the lungs, liver, and kidneys.
Dogs do not get heartworm disease directly from an infected dog, they get it via a bite from a mosquito that is carrying heartworm larvae.
It is difficult, expensive and risky to treat heartworm disease but using preventative measures, like the use of Heartgard for dogs, is often the suggested route to go.
