heathen

Heathen comes from Old English hæðen and Old Norse heiðinn and describes a person living on the heathland. It is a Germanic analog for the Latin-rooted word pagan. Heathen is a rather recent word, formed in the pre-Christian Europe by Christians to describe those who weren't Christians. The heathens lived most often on a rural area, while the first Christians lived in cities; hence the expression heathen.

The word heathen has varied meanings, and it is most often used by believers in monotheistic religions, namely Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This definition includes most practitioners of polytheistic and indigenous religions, and also neo-paganism.

Nowadays the word heathen is no longer considered a pejorative term, and people are actually proud to call themselves heathens. The blogosphere blooms with heathen content. Among other topics, one can read up on heathenism in everyday life and heathen ways of Christmas celebration. The gap to modernity is filled with discussions on the heathen practices we keep and how a modern pagan thinks. One can even learn about heathen magic.
