Height refers to the measurement of vertical distance, and can be used either to express how tall or how high up an object is. When describing how high up an object is, height often becomes synonymous with altitude.

Human height describes the distance from the soles of the feet to the top of the head in a person standing in an upright position. Height is usually measured in feet and inches in the United States, but in meters and centimeters in Europe. Human populations sharing a genetic background will usually have an average height that is characteristic to their group. Deviations of over 20% from the average are usually caused by the genetic conditions known as dwarfism and giantism.

Human growth is controlled via the secretion of the growth hormone within the pituitary gland in the brain. Some individuals who are not developing properly and may wish to grow taller can undergo a special medical treatment with the growth hormone.

The average height for each of the two sexes varies greatly across the world, with men usually being significantly taller than women. Vertical growth stops for both men and women right after adolescence.
