A hemorrhoid is a swelling of the veins in the rectum and anus. The medical term refers to the cushions of tissue filled with blood vessels at the intersection of the rectum and anus, but more commonly it refers to all types of vein swelling in the rectum and anus. There are various types of hemorrhoids, generally classified as internal or external.

Hemorrhoids are believed to start from a variety of causes including sitting for long periods, straining during bowel movements, hypertension, obesity and pregnancy. Hemorrhoid treatment protocols vary in cost and effectiveness ranging from hemorrhoid cream, warm baths, bidet use and cold compresses to relieve the symptoms and reduce the swelling. In some cases surgical treatment will be recommended.

Others offer contributions from a wide range of health care professionals with discussions and videos on hemorrhoid relief.
