This is goood! Heroic Fantasy has an award of its own. The David Gemmell Legend Award for Fantasy will choose among the best heroic fantasy titles of 2008. The first winner will be known somewhen next year. As Cheryl Morgan said, that's great news for fans and writers alike.

A certain writer wrote to me today with the following observation: I’ve been paging through the year’s best anthologies.  It seems like none of them have traditional fantasy.   There seem to be a lot with more contemporary/modern themes.  My stories are mostly heroic fantasy.  Why is that genre missing from “Best of” anthos?  Is it out of style?

Jig The Goblin Series, Goblin Quest, Goblin Hero, Goblin War-- Jim Hines This is an entertaining series. The first book is about how a scrawny pushed around goblin is turned into a reluctant hero. Jig is sent out by the other goblins to find out what is happening in the tunnels.

Just what did it take to find, bind, and mind the twenty-one entries that create The Return of the Sword: An Anthology of Heroic Adventure (RotS)? Nothing more than access to a remaining inventory of accepted stories, a couple years’ worth of reviewing and critiquing, a remembered blog post, and an expectant boss.

Today, I finished reading David Gemmell’s Echoes of the Great Song for the second time. I read a lot of books but there are very few that I’ve read more than once. I’m a huge fan of the late David Gemmell as I have read nearly all of his books and Echoes is by far my favorite of his works and one of my favorite books of all time.
