According to the CDC, the organization also known as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, herpes is "a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2)."

Herpes can show itself in many forms and can evolve into more serious problems if the virus is not treated. Some of these disorders include the two most common forms, genital and orofacial infections, which affect a combined 80 percent of the US adult population, along with intermediate disorders such as herpes gladiatorium, herpes simplex encephalitis, herpes whitlow, neonatal herpes simplex, ocular herpes, and viral meningitis. In some cases, the herpes virus can even lead to Alzheimer's disease and Bell's palsy.

While there is no cure for herpes, people can help treat and limit the disease through several, readily available options as recommended and discussed by the CDC.
