Douglas W. Kmiec, a high profile lawyer in the Reagan and Poppy Bush administrations, lays out what he thinks is the solution to this gay marriage mess. Essentially, get the government out of the business of religious marriage, and instead create civil unions for all that are legally recognized by the government.

November 20, 2008 Proposition 8 stirs things in me that I have to talk about.  This is my personal blog, these are my personal thoughts and feelings.  Im willing to hear your thoughts and discuss them, but please be respectful.  There will be no hate or disrespect allowed.  I warn you.   First of all.

NOTE: This is a very controversial and emotional topic (for me and for so many others) that I was not going to write about, at first, but later changed my mind. On Election Day, as so many of us celebrated the the victorious effort of now President-elect Barack Obama, another movement was taking place in three states around the country - though, most notably, in California.

We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization.

Since Proposition 8 passed in California, once again marriage is to be defined there as between a man and a woman.  This has lead to outrage to those that deem this unfair and discriminatory, and has caused more anger to boil.

As a coach working with gays and lesbians who are coming out in midlife, I am often called upon to help people sort out whether to stay in or leave their heterosexual marriage. It’s not an easy question to answer.

In an election otherwise full of liberal triumphs, the gay rights movement suffered a stunning defeat Tuesday night. California voters approved a ban on same-sex marriages that overrides a recent court decision legalizing them.

Let’s go over the standard arguments against gay marriage, and I’ll address them one by one. (Thanks to the jackasses at nogaymarriage.com for making this easier.) Maybe it’ll help keep this a little more organized, but I still don’t promise not to stray a bit. God says it’s bad, according to the Book, anyway.
