"Oh, why don't you just go take a hike?!" This stinging rebuke has been tossed around so much as a euphemism for "Get lost!" or "Get out of here!" that it has almost destroyed any enthusiasm associated with the phrase. Hiking, in reality, should be fun! And "taking a hike" should be one of life's great pleasures! It angries up the blood that such a genuinely natural and exciting activity has such a bad connotation these days.

However, the word "hike" did get some credibility back when it began being used by the quarterback in the classic game of football. The term is used when the quarterback calls for the football from the center.

Hiking itself has several different meanings, even within the general realm of walking through nature. "Day packing," "bushwhacking," "backpacking," "tramping," and "trekking" are all terms used for hiking, but each has a slightly different meaning.

So whether you are staying at the luxurious Tegernsee hotels and just doing a day hike, or you are trudging through the thick underbrush and doing some bonafide bushwhacking, take some time to enjoy the Great Outdoors. Bloggers speaking about hiking can be found at sites like hikingtripreports and appalachiantrail2010.
