Hives, or urticaria, is a type of rash that can be recognized after the itchy and slightly elevated red bumps that appear on the surface of the skin. While the rash is often an allergic reaction, there are other non-allergic causes, such as environmental factors, dieting, medication, parasitic infections, toxins and more.

Hives treatment includes avoiding the triggering factor as well as taking antihistamine medication. Antihistamines work by blocking the action of histamine, which is the compound primarily responsible for triggering an inflammatory response. Inflammation is an important part of natural immunity, which protects us against the actions of pathogens and enables healing. However, this is a standard reaction which may sometimes trigger inappropriately, such as in the case of allergies.

There are two types of hives, based on the intensity and persistence of the rash, namely acute and chronic urticaria. The acute form refers to a rash which shows up within minutes of contact with an allergen and may last from a few hours to a few weeks. Food allergic reactions are usually categorized as acute urticaria.

The chronic form of the hives refers to a rash that persists for more than 6 weeks and is more difficult to treat. In many cases, the rash can last for more than a year, with a survey showing that about 20% of chronic urticaria sufferers have endured the rash for over 20 years.
