Holiday Inn was originally started in 1952 by Kemmons Wilson. Since those humble times, Holiday Inn has grown exponentially to establish itself as one of the leading hotel chains in the United States and the world.

Five years after its establishment, Holiday Inn officially became a franchise under Wilson's leadership, leading to a massive explosion of growth of the hotel across the country. By 1972, Holiday Inn had approximately 1,400 outposts in the United States. In the 1980s, Holiday Inn's dominance began to lose some steam, but still was profitable. This led the United Kingdom-based Bass to purchase Holiday Inn in 1988. By 2003, the InterContinental Hotels Group was formed to run Bass' hotel operations, including Holiday Inn, Embassy Suites, and Crowne Plaza among others. Currently, Holiday Inns come in many fashions and levels of service, including Holiday Inn Garden Courts (non-US hotels), the original Holiday Inn with two variations, their Hotel/Suites and Resort brands, Holiday Inn Select (which halted operations in 2006), Holiday Inn Sunspree Resorts, and Nickelodeon Family Suites, a standalone brand in Orlando, Florida.

IHG also runs Holiday Inn Express, a mid-level unit of the hotelier, known for its quirky commercials featuring people who show amazing intelligence and knowledge they didn't have before staying at one of these hotels.
