Hollywood is a district in the city of Los Angeles, U.S.A. It's known as the cultural identity and historical center of movie studios and stars.

The film industry was originally based in New York, with most films made in New York or New Jersey. In 1908, however, a growing number of filmmakers started to relocate to Southern California due to cheap land and labor, varied scenery, ideal climate and the ability to film outdoors all year round.

By the early 1920s, Hollywood had become the world's film capital. It produced virtually all films show in the United States. During the '20s, Hollywood was recruiting many of Europe's most talented actors and actresses, like Greta Garbo and Hedy Lamarr, directors like Ernst Lubitsch, as well as camera operators, lighting technicians, and set designers, by the end of the decade Hollywood was the nation's fifth largest industry, attracting 83 cents out of every dollar Americans spent on amusement.

When most people talk about "Hollywood" they are talking about those who work in the entertainment industry of film and television, and the culture of extravagance, glamour, hedonism, fun, and scandalous gossip.
