holocaust
A holocaust is an enormous devastation or mass slaughter. Most commonly, as "the Holocaust," the term is used to refer to the extermination of six million Jews during World War Two by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party in Germany.
The terminology of the Holocaust has been a matter of debate over the decades. Though it was clearly an act of mass murder, it is even more appropriately classified as an act of genocide, as the intention was the total eradication of Jews. Surprisingly, there are many Holocaust deniers - fringe conspiracy theorists who believe the history of the Holocaust was fabricated or exaggerated.
Some have argued that anti-Jewish sentiments throughout Germany led to a willingness or complacency among Germans regarding the millions of deaths in concentration camps that were occurring in Europe during the period. Objectors to this argument suggest that it stigmatizes all Germans as Nazi sympathizers, which, they argue, is false.
Application of the term "holocaust" to events other than the Nazi Holocaust remains extremely controversial and a sensitive subject, especially among Holocaust survivors.
