homepage
A homepage is the face of the website. It usually serves to display a welcome screen, an explanation of the site's features and goals, and to provide an area for the site owner to create and display a visual logo. The logo and visual display act more as a trademark of the site's services.
When users connect to a website, they are almost invariably led to a homepage first. For web design that targets the greatest number of potential needs of the website's traffic. If there are several different reasons why a user might visit a particular site, the homepage acts as an index of the options and subcategories that are available. A website creator will generally try to anticipate user needs and place the most frequently used features, such as sign-in icons or a concentrated mission statement near the top of the page, where it will be seen by the greatest amount of traffic. On the other end, less frequented routes are available, with technical information and publications records listed for people who have a more business minded interest in the website.
Users themselves have another type of homepage that is simply a saved setting on their personal internet browser. Browsers usually have their defaults set open on to the homepage of a search engine that the manufacturer is partnered with, but users have the option to modify their browser's homepage to open to whatever page they want. When the browser is launched, it automatically loads directly to the user's set homepage.
Both this page and the homepage of website act as landing pages for visitors. On the landing pages of search engines, users are given options to click on buttons that link to other popular websites like social in order to bring the most traffic past the website. The traffic allows them to sell space to advertisers and blog rolls that further fund the website's financial needs. The advertising is usually targeted to the interests of the traffic of that particular website. The website takes advantage of the convenience of the outbound links and layout organization as presented to the customer, and exchanges that convenience of the service for the ability to advertise.
