Hope Solo is a professional women's soccer player. She is the goalie for the American Women's World Cup soccer team. She had a stellar career at the University of Washington, where she first played the goalkeeper position, and was named to the all Pac-10 team and was named a NCSAA All-American.

Following college, Solo has played in both the US and in Europe for professional teams. She rose to prominence in the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup tournament, not so much for her playing as for her outspokenness. Solo, the starting goalie, was benched by the team's coach during a match against Brazil and the back-up goalie, Briana Scurry, started instead. The US team lost the match 4-0. After the game, Solo openly criticized the coach's decision to bench her in favor of Scurry. Following that, the coach announced that Solo was no longer with the team.

In 2008, Solo was named the starting goalkeeper for the US Olympic Team heading to the Beijing games. The US women's team won the gold medal that year, and many credited Solo's bravura performance in the goal, especially against Brazil.

Solo has been the starting goalie during the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and was feted by her team and the whole country after a heroic performance against Brazil in the quarterfinals.

Many journalists and bloggers have noted that Solo's fame is not unrelated to her good looks.
