A hot tub is a large warm to hot water-filled tub generally made from wood, plastic, or ceramic. In most cases hot tubs are used for soaking, relaxation, massage, or hydrotherapy. Often, jets are installed for massaging.

The term 'hot tub' is often used interchangeably with 'home spa' and 'portable spa' although technically they are different.

Hot tubs by technical definition are round tubs made from wood and are built outdoors. A home spa on the other hand is generally made from plastic with a surrounding casing made from wood or wood-like material. A home spa may be above or below ground and in or outdoors. Portable spas are technically pre-assembled tubs that sit above the ground.
