hpv
HPV is the acronym for Human papillomavirus, a family of viruses that affect human skin and mucous membranes. While there are close to 200 asymptomatic HPV strains, some of them can cause warts, and others can even lead to cancers in the genital area of both men and women. In rare cases, HPV can lead to cancers of the throat and tongue.
Genital warts count among the most recognizable signs of an HPV infection. Since there are over 120 types of papillomaviruses, different strains are referred to by number. HPV types 6 and 11 are responsible for the overwhelming majority of genital warts. There is currently no known cure for HPV, although genital warts treatment to reduce infectivity, as well improve the appearance of the infected areas, does exist.
Various types of creams and gels are recommended for smaller warts, while laser treatment and surgical removal may be needed to handle larger warts. Nonetheless, the human immune system can fight and eliminate HPV within 2 years for 90% of infection cases.
