HSV is an acronym for the herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, which are two of the most common viruses in the herpes family to infect humans.


HSV 1 is usually located in the orofacial area and causes blisters commonly known as cold sores, whilst HSV 2 generally affects the genital area. Both forms of the virus are transmitted through direct contact with an infectious surface.

Unfortunately, there is currently no known medical cure that eradicates the virus completely, although the human immune system is usually able to defeat the infection and slowly build an immunity to the virus over time.

However, even asymptomatic carries of the herpes viruses are able to infect other individuals. Due to the pain and discomfort associated with infection, different forms of genital herpes treatment exist, including antiviral drugs like acyclovir and valacyclovir.

Topical treatments and natural dietary supplements are also believed to help alleviate the symptoms of HSV infection, although there is insufficient scientific evidence to back those claims.
