Legendary magazine publisher Hugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago Illinois. Hugh served in the U.S. Army and worked as a copywriter for Esquire before launching Playboy magazine in December 1953. The inaugural issue featured iconic screen actress and entertainer Marilyn Monroe.

In 1959 Hugh Hefner divorced his wife of 10 years (and mother of his two children), Mildred Williams. He continued heading Playboy as a bachelor until 1989, when he married Playmate of the Year Kimberley Conrad in an extravagant wedding at the Playboy Mansion. The couple would go on to have two children together before separating in 1999.

In 2005, reality TV invaded the Playboy Mansion when the E! network launched The Girls Next Door, a reality-based show that followed around three of Hefner’s main girlfriends at the time - Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson.

Hefner's authorized biography, Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream, was released in October of 2008. The book documents Hugh Hefner's life and examines his undeniable influence on American culture.

Hugh Hefner celebrated the 55th anniversary edition of Playboy magazine on December 12, 2008.
