HVAC is an acronym standing for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning and it refers to technologies and equipment for automotive or indoor comfort. Since this technology is based on principles of physics and material sciences such as thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics, designing HVAC systems is an important sub-field of mechanical engineering.


HVAC systems are important components in the design of any industrial buildings, from office buildings to living quarters, as well as any type of construction where a tight environment regulation is required, which includes aquariums, underground facilities, submarines, airplanes and many more. The main environmental aspects controlled via HVAC systems are temperature, air humidity and general air quality.

The advantages of using HVAC technologies are unquestionable, especially in closed environments otherwise extremely difficult to inhabit. Because they are so effective and can increase human comfort, HVAC systems have become a rule in modern residential buildings and cars. Consequently, many different types of heating systems have been developed to cater to our needs, some of which can perform multiple functions - such as central heating for colder climates, or forced air systems that can provide heating during winter, and air conditioning during warmer seasons. Most houses and offices will be furnished with systems cleverly adapted to a climate specific to the area. For example, Yukon heating systems would be well adapted to subarctic weather where winters are long and warmth production is the main requirement, while Houston air conditioning systems should be adapted to hot and long summers specific to the subtropical climate of Texas, while also providing heating for cool winters.

Ventilation is extremely important in densely populated closed environments such as office buildings, and it includes both the exchange of air with the outside and the circulation of air inside the building. The purpose of this is to replenish oxygen, control temperature, while removing moisture, odors, smoke and dust. Natural ventilation will replace the air in a building with fresh outside air, and can be done via windows or trickle vents, while forced ventilation will employ an air handling unit to perform the task mechanically. Ventilation is usually paired with air conditioning as part of a building's HVAC system, to provide optimum comfort for inhabitants. The main purpose of air conditioning systems is to remove heat, which is typically achieved during the refrigeration cycle. Air Conditioning systems will often contain a reversing valve, which enables them to produce warm air during colder seasons.
